CANDIDATES STATEMENT

The duties and responsibilities of a county supervisor are myriad and very complex. My careers with the Army Corps of Engineers and as a business owner have prepared me to deal with the wide range of issues facing Plumas County. At the Corps of Engineers I was responsible for real estate management of the Corp’s civil works projects such as the Sacramento River/Deep Water Shipping Channel , Englebright Lake, Black Butte Lake and Lake Mendocino. I also had responsibility for Army, Air Force and Reserve military installations in the Northern California and Reno, Nevada regions. In a world of shrinking financial resources and increasing demands for service the understanding I gained working across all levels of government and with local citizens is a valuable resource. The ability to solve problems working collaboratively and in cooperation with others is one that will serve me well as District 3 Supervisor.

My experience as a Real Estate Broker and business owner gave me an understanding of what it takes to keep a business open in our economy and the background to work with people, manage employees, work a business plan, budget and pay the bills. These skills are necessary in conducting the business of Plumas County. In addition, strong, successful businesses play a critical role in providing job opportunities. As your District 3 representative I will focus on supporting our existing businesses and will support the economic and community development efforts of Plumas County Community Development, Plumas Corp and local Chambers of Commerce to broaden our economic base with new business and industry.

Beautiful Lake Almanor is truly the key to life in the Basin. I strongly support the work of the 2105 Committee, the Save Lake Almanor Committee and the Water Quality Subcommittee. Preserving the high quality of our lake is a top priority. This includes not only the water quality issues we are all familiar with but also insuring access to the lake for boating and water related recreation and maintaining our quality fisheries.

We need to create a diversity of affordable housing near employment opportunities. As your Supervisor I will continue to empower and support our new Planning Commission as it starts the process of updating the County General Plan; their work will be critical in the coming years as we look at locating housing, commercial and industrial properties in the Basin and balancing that with open space, forest lands and habitat. I will continue to strongly encourage public participation in the planning process. It will be much easier to decide what we want before it is built than to try to remove it after the fact. Building a strong community that embraces growth and change for the vitality it brings rather than allowing growth only for an increase in taxes should be our primary goal.

As an advocate for our community I have gained first hand knowledge of the issues faced by our Seniors, Youth and families. Some of my community service includes: Chair of the Plumas County Commission on Aging, Board President of Plumas Rural Services Inc., Lake Almanor Representative Plumas County Planning Commission, Chester Representative to Almanor Basin Watershed Advisory Committee and Vice President of the Board of Chester Public Utility District, Board Member Almanor Basin Community Resource Center and Board Member Almanor Residential Incorporated (Wildwood) and Court Appointed Special Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children. I also serve as an advocate for senior services as Chair of the five county Area 3 Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council and as a senior advocate at State level as a Director on the Triple-A Council of California.

I will provide strong representation for District 3 at the county level. I will work to assure that we receive our “fair share” from the County including Health and Social Services and law enforcement.

Our Plumas County government will face great challenges in the days ahead. This will require the full attention of your elected supervisor. I am committed to serving on your behalf and will make this my “full time” job, I ask for your vote on June 6th.
